Valerian-and-the-City-of-a-Thousand-Planets

Luc Besson’s ‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets‘ isn’t due in theaters until later this summer but the famed director already wants to start in on a sequel. Obviously, box office sales will dictate if one happens it is great to hear that he’d want to do a follow-up! After all, this is the man who gave us ‘The Fifth Element’ and fans of his work have wanted another outing into a far-flung science fiction future ever since. At least he isn’t like Director Daniel Espinosa who doesn’t want to make a sequel to his critically acclaimed ‘Life.’

Besson is pretty committed to the idea of a follow-up film and is planning pre-production on his own without studio involvement so he can push forward as quick as possible if it ends up getting the greenlight!

“I’m writing already. I like to be ready in case it’s working. If it doesn’t work, you’re always ready; there’s nothing to prep. But if we’re lucky and people like the film, I would love to do a second one for sure because I love the characters they’re fun together.”

With how many movies have had massive delays in sequels in recent years, this is music to my ears. It isn’t every day that you find a director this committed to their work with the means to be able to start planning this far ahead on just a possibility of a sequel happening.

Thankfully, as ‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’ is based on a French graphic novel series we know that there is more than enough source material for him to mine for wherever the movie could head going forward. Hopefully, audiences share his excitement for the film.
