‘The Batman’ Is Reportedly Being Re-Written From The Ground Up

This doesn’t look good.  First, Ben Affleck abdicated the director’s chair for the first ‘Batman’ movie that was supposed to be part of the larger DC Expended Universe of films, allowing Matt Reeves (‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’) to take over.  Now it looks as if the script for ‘The Batman’, which was worked on in collaboration between Affleck, DC Comics’ Geoff Johns and Chris Terrio, who collaborated with Affleck on ‘Argo’ and also contributed to ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and the two upcoming ‘Justice League’ movies, is being thrown out entirely!  Reeves is apparently working on ‘War For the Planet of the Apes’ until June, but after that, it appears he will be either working on a new script or will have one penned.  And considering it takes months to write a script, there’s no way ‘The Batman’ will arrive in theaters by 2018 as planned.  But for the record, the original script for ‘The Batman’ had the Dark Knight facing off against Deathstroke the Terminator, played by Joe Manganiello.  At this point, there’s no telling if that will still be the case.

Variety’s Justin Kroll took to Twitter to update fans:

Since the movie is (reportedly) being re-written from scratch, there’s no telling what characters will be in it. Hell, they could write Crazy Quilt and Killer Moth into it at this point.

On a more somber note, Affleck just revealed that he had completed another stint in rehab due to alcohol addiction.  There’s no indication that this had anything to do with the delay of ‘The Batman’… but it’s not good.  Best wishes, Ben!

However, it was reported that Warner Brothers was happy with the last draft, so there may not be any major changes.  We’ll just have to wait and see.

Are you disappointed that ‘The Batman’ starring Ben Affleck is being delayed?

  • Until WB back the hell off and let people work, these movies are doomed to mediocrity.

I hate to be too negative but WB literally sat on its DC properties for YEARS until their investors started pointing at Marvel and saying “Why can’t you do this?! Why is it just Batman over and over? We could be making millions!” I honestly don’t think they have a clue what to do with the others. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for “Wonder Woman” at the very least. Geoff Johns’ involvement was a positive sign, but not sure what to think now.

I’m sure Ben Affleck’s struggle with alcoholism isn’t filling WB execs with confidence.

It’s something he’s dealt with in the past. Hopefully he will again. Honestly, as crappy a movie as “Batman V Superman” was, I really had no complaints about Ben as Batman.

I was excited to see his take on Batman but something bothered me and it didn’t really hit until I heard about Ben’s recent relapse:

His Bruce Wayne is a drunk.

Ben Affleck waded through many of his scenes in a way that may have meant to make him appear weary, a veteran crime-fighter who’d seen and been through perhaps a little too much, but upon hindsight he simply looked perpetually hungover. The stubble on his chin didn’t help and the drink in his hand was as big a mistake to me as giving him an arsenal of firearms.

I love the way Affleck fills the suit, I like his voice (as Batman and Wayne), and I think he’s a talented guy but he’s more Tony Stark than Dark Knight.

I can see that. I never really gave it any thought, but now that you mention it, I have always seen Batman as someone who is always fully alert, even in his sometimes clownish Bruce Wayne identity and drinking would impede that.
