Deadpool 2

Last year, comic book writer/illustrator Rob Liefeld, creator of Deadpool, Cable and other popular concepts, revealed that at one point, 20th Century Fox had a movie in the works based on ‘X-Force’, the paramilitary strike force, led by Cable, that evolved out of the more benign ‘New Mutants’.  But it appears that plans changed and ‘X-Force’ was scrapped.

Those plans may have included ‘Deadpool’, last year’s surprise R-rated smash, with Ryan Reynolds playing the popular title mercenary, who– in the comics– debuted in the pages of ‘New Mutants’ before becoming a perennial thorn in the sides of Cable and X-Force.  While breaking the fourth wall, Reynolds’ Wade Wilson informed audiences that Cable was going to be in the sequel.  It also announced soon after that fellow mutant mercenary Domino would also appear.

Both Cable and Domino, and even Deadpool himself, have served as members of ‘X-Force’ for extended periods of time, leading many to wonder if ‘Deadpool 2’ would lead into a full-blown X-Force debut in ‘Deadpool 3’.  Well, no actually.  Instead, ‘Deadpool 2’ sets up a NEW ‘X-Force’ movie.

While promoting ‘Logan’, executive producer Simon Kinberg laid out Fox’s plans to further expand its X-Men universe, the ratings system and what else fans can look forward to:

“We are working hard on New Mutants, Gambit with Channing Tatum, Deadpool 2 and the new X-Force movie where Deadpool is alongside Cable and other main characters. Deadpool 2 is going into production this year. Then X-Force which is a combination of Deadpool, and Cable –they’re like the Black ops of the X-Men. They’re much darker and have an R-rated decibel. There are other X-Men characters coming into X-Force at different times in the comic, but it’s separate from X-Men.

There is a larger architecture to tell these stories in. I talk to the studio all the time about this and there is a plan for how these movies can connect and be a part of a larger narrative. It’s something that’s fun, exciting and it will be interesting to see how we marry the different tones that we’ve been generating in these standalone movies of the X-Men universe. But we go into making the best movie we can. It’s not just about a Colossus or Deadpool cameo. Connecting all of these movies will happen when it organically makes sense. These movies aren’t simply being built as stepping stones to a larger story. Each one is wholly enclosed and a movie worth seeing.”

The previously planned ‘X-Force’ movie was intended to feature Cable, Domino, Cannonball, Warpath and Feral, but at this point it’s obvious that Deadpool will play a featured role.  In addition to Cable and Domino, it’s possible that the movie could feature Olivia Munn’s Psylocke, who was introduced in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’.  That would create a bridge between the X-Men proper with the wonky ‘Deadpool’ side of things.  Colossus, who had a large role in the first ‘Deadpool’ has also served as a member, so he’s a possibility as well.

Considering that ‘Deadpool 2’ hasn’t gone into production yet, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.  But does the idea of a Deadpool/Cable-fronted ‘X-Force’ sound enticing?  Would you prefer they stick with ‘Deadpool”s cartoonish comedic tone?  Or go with something more serious?  Which characters would you like to see included?
