When ‘Underworld: Blood Wars‘ hits theaters next month, director Anna Foerster (‘Outlander’,’Criminal Minds’) will be helming the piece and she has just had a chance to share her thoughts on not only the franchise to date but also the previous installment in the series. This is Foerster’s first time trying her hand at the big screen but her mindset should have many fans eager to see the return of Kate Beckinsale as Selene for more than a standard vampire slaying romp and be giving us something that not only has a great plot but is visually spectacular.

Why do I have that feeling? Well, in a recent interview about her upcoming film she said that:

“I have seen the first two movies, the first one I saw it when it just came out it was quite extraordinary especially as a visual piece and creating a world that I have not seen before at that time. I mean later a lot of people copied it in different way. I think at the time this was one of the movies that kind of set a specific standard for the genre and I was a big fan of the look and the vibe and the tone of it.”

The look and feel of the first two films really were amazing and while no longer unique, they did help set the tone for the franchise. A full return to that style will keep fans happy but not only that but it sounds like we’ll be getting a fully developed world which didn’t feel quite the case with ‘Underworld 4’:

“To me it became more like a futuristic science fiction piece and what missed for me is that balance with mythology and history were two one dimensional and clean for me. What I love about the other ones and what I love about what we’re doing right now is that they’re really interesting characters that have layers and even if it’s an actual film there is quite a lot of character stuff going on and I felt that it wasn’t quite as developed as it could have been. There’s a lot of interesting stuff; the mother daughter stuff, a lot of heavy stuff but I’m not sure if it actually worked as emotionally impactful as it could have.”

It really does feel that she has a solid grasp on what has and hasn’t worked in the franchise so far and hopefully ‘Underworld: Blood Wars’ will reflect that.

Do you think that Anna Foerster has a good direction for ‘Underworld 5’ in mind? Are you looking forward to the return of Beckinsale as Selene? Share your thoughts below!
