Marvel has been doing an amazing job at bringing the Star Wars comics to the forefront of their releases and their latest limited series announcement is ‘Star Wars: Darth Maul‘. That’s right ladies and gentlemen, we’re getting a first-hand look at Darth Sidious’ first pupil who not only has been a mainstay from his introduction in ‘Star Wars: The Phantom Menace’ but both ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ and ‘Star Wars: Rebels‘. Now, we’ll be finding out a bit more about Darth Maul and be looking into a bit of his origin story as Cullen Bunn (‘Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe’) pens the series with Luke Ross (‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens Adaptation’) handling the art for it!
It will be interesting to see if anything we see setup here will be something that hints at his future roles in the two animated series which he appears in. At this point of his origin story though we’ll be pretty early on as he is still training under Sidious and is at such an early stage that he isn’t allowed to engage in combat with the Jedi quite yet. We’ll also be introduced to Eldra Kaitis who is a Jedi Padawan which Maul tries to lure to the Dark Side.
As Kaitis hasn’t been described in any future installment of the Star Wars mythology at this point it will be interesting to see if they survive the encounter.
According to Bunn:
“Darth Maul was, as you might imagine, my favorite character in The Phantom Menace. I loved that we were seeing a new kind of Sith. Though he was only in the movie for a few short scenes, he left his mark. I couldn’t help but wonder what had driven his brash, impatient anger. That’s part of what we’re exploring with this book.”
One of the main things that he loves about the first appearance of Maul was his impatient pacing back and forth while waiting to fight Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn.
“I like seeding where that impatience and anger comes from.”
When talking about the new Padawan that will be introduced he says that the character “has a huge impact on Maul’s life going forward.”
I for one can’t wait to see how the introduction to Maul plays out and really hope we get some hints laid that explain his actions in both the animated series which he appears in.
