Cable and Deadpool

There has been NO reporting of this, so I’m not sure what to think of it, but the ‘Deadpool 2’ IMDB page has an actor listed as “rumored” to be playing Cable/Nathan Summers in the upcoming sequel.

Several big name actors have thrown their names out as being interested in wanted to play the cyborg mutant from the future, including Ron Perlman and Stephen Lang.  Both actors strongly resemble the comic book character.  Perlman has, of course, already starred as a superhero, ‘Hellboy’ in two movies and has expressed interest in revisiting that character.  Lang is known for playing the villain in ‘Avatar’ and recently starred in the acclaimed hit horror movie ‘Don’t Breathe’.

Despite their resemblance to the illustrated Cable, another name has emerged as a front runner: Kyle Chandler.  Chandler is much younger than the comic book Cable, but he is arguably a more recognizable face than the other two actors, having starred on popular TV shows like ‘Friday Night Lights’, ‘Early Edition’ and Netflix’s current ‘Bloodlines’ and appearing in big movies like ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ and ‘Argo’.

But according to the IMDB page, the part has gone to another actor:

Meet Rich Sands.  No, you don’t know him from anything.  He appeared in a low budget ‘RoboCop’ knock off called ‘Weaponized’ that came out this year, starring Tom Sizemore and Mickey Rourke, which I assume went straight-to-video. He also appeared in a Vietnamese movie called ‘You Have A Nice Flight’ which is now in post-production.  He appears on ‘Kzaiz Magazine Back Stage’ a series based on a Spanish language entertainment publication.  Besides ‘Deadpool 2’, he also has three more movies either filming or in post action movies ‘Bloody Hands’, ‘Detainment’, in which he has top billing and thriller ‘Fly On The Wall’.

He does appear to be a fan of Marvel’s mutants, as his IMDB page features a few pictures of him dressed as Wolverine:

And he also appears to have the right age+physique combo to play Cable, but could he have really won the role over bigger names like Chandler, Perlman and Lang?

Well… maybe.  Ed Skrein, who played Ajax/Francis in the first ‘Deadpool’ was pretty much an unknown beforehand.  As was Brianna Hildebrand, a.k.a. Negasonic Teenage Warhead.  The film was padded out with a few somewhat familiar faces like MMA fighter Gina Carano, T.J. Miller and Morena Baccarin, but none of those is a box office draw.  And honestly, even Ryan Reynolds had starred in nothing but flops since 2009’s romcom ‘The Proposal’.

But even with just Reynolds and no other major stars, ‘Deadpool’ made $363M in the U.S. on a shoestring budget of $58 million.  The sequel will have a much bigger budget, but it may not be a bad idea to cut costs where possible by turning to lesser-know cast members, especially if ‘Deadpool 2’ is pretty much already guaranteed to be a huge hit one way or the other.

Of course, IMDB can be updated by anyone.  So take this with a grain of salt.  But what do think about an unknown taking on such a high profile role?
