Didn’t see this coming, although maybe I should have. But ‘Boo! A Medea Halloween’ scared up $27.6 million to take he #1 spot this past weekend, fending off Tom Cruise’s vehicle ‘Jack Reacher: Never Go Back’, which still did respectably, earning $23M.
It seems movie-goers are getting into the Halloween spirit. ‘Ouija: Origin of Evil’ landed at #3, with $14M. This movie’s budget was a paltry $9M, so it has already made back its money.
‘Medea’ earned an A CinemaScore from audiences, which could translate to staying power, although with Halloween falling next week, it may fall off after that.
‘Jack Reacher’, meanwhile is at the top when it comes to international box office. With foreign numbers added in, the action flick took in $54M. It received a B+ CinemaScore.
Interestingly, both ‘Medea’ and ‘Jack Reacher’ were duds with critics, but audiences loved them. On the other hand, ‘Ouija’ was a hit with critics, but audiences don’t much care for it, giving it only a C.
Here are the Top Five:
- Boo! A Medea Halloween (Lionsgate) – $27.6M
- Jack Reacher: Never Look Back (Paramount) – $23M
- Ouija: Origin of Evil (Universal) – $14M
- Th Accountant (Warner Brothers) – $14M
- The Girl On The Train (Universal) – $7.3M
The Jon Hamm comedy ‘Keeping Up With The Joneses’ was a certified bomb, landing at #7 with only $5.6M.
Next week should remain somewhat stable, as the only big movie opening is ‘Inferno’ starring Tom Hanks and directed by Ron Howard. This film is a follow up to ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and ‘Angels & Demons’, with Hanks reprising his role as Robert Langdon. These films are based on the novels by David Koepp. Hanks is joined this time by Felicity Jones.
The following week should be much more interesting as Marvel Studios’ ‘Doctor Strange’ faces off with the highly anticipated family movie ‘Trolls’. Who will come out on top? We’ll just have to wait and see!
