Recently director James Gunn shared some concept art of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2‘ with Empire and now we’ve learned a little more about both the creature and why the Guardians are facing off against it. Knowing what the creature itself is isn’t too much of a spoiler but knowing where it is from and why our heroes are fighting it could very well be. So, as always, you’ve been warned about possible spoilers ahead! Feel free to stare at the lovely Cthulhu-dinosaur looking monster above before either clicking back or scrolling down and finding out more!

So the down and dirty of what the creature is and why it might be important is held in a very vague comment:

“That’s an Abilisk. It’s a multidimensional being, and the Guardians have been hired to fight him.”

That doesn’t seem to be saying much right off the bat but let’s dig into it a little shall we? There are two key takeaways we can get here so we’ll examine them both.

For started this is a multidimensional being. The multidimensional aspect has been an ongoing theme throughout Marvel’s Cinematic and Televises universes. In the movies we’ve already seen Scott Lang in the Quantum Realm in ‘Ant-Man’ and there have been many mentions of the “nine realms” in the ‘Thor’ Movies. Add into that as this Fall we’ll be seeing ‘Doctor Strange’ looks travel through different realities or realms in all of the previews. The final kicker is the Darkforce in the second season of ‘Agent Carter’ which is also from another dimension.

So this is another little nod to the multidimensional world that these heroes live in and I suspect it will be a major plot point down the line.

Secondly, we see that the heroes have been “hired to fight him.” We all know that the Guardians not only want to be good guys but are also really in it for the money. What is a bunch of ex-mercenaries, criminals, and the like going to do when trying to combine these two desires? Well, get hired to take down some intergalactic scum of course. It seems like that is exactly what they end up doing in this concept art.

Are you looking forward to seeing the Guardians fight off the Abilisk in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’? Do you think we’ll get any other hints of other dimensions in the film? Share your thoughts below True Believers!
