Supergirl-TV

‘Supergirl’ has borrowed quite heavily from her more-famous cousin’s mythology and this fall will be no different.  Not only is the Man of Steel himself set to soar into National City, portrayed by Tyler Hoechlin, but expect many more friends and foes from the ‘Superman’ stable to join in.

One ally who will actually be joining as a series regular is Floriana Lima, who takes on the role of Maggie Sawyer.  In an earlier report, Sawyer would be the head of National City’s newly formed Science Police dedicated to dealing with alien and metahuman threats. In the most recent report, however, she was simply described as a member of the National City Police Department, who “takes an interest in alien-related cases.”  (Or perhaps the latter will lead into the former?)

Sawyer was originally introduced on ‘Superman: The Animated Series’ as a (possibly the first) openly lesbian character.  Like Harley Quinn on ‘Batman’, the tough-as-nails Sawyer was such a popular addition that she was brought over to the comics and was until recently engaged to Batwoman/Kate Kane.

Lima is a TV vet having numerous ongoing roles on shows such as ‘The Family’, ‘Allegiance’, ‘The Mob Doctor’ and ‘Poor Paul’ and guest roles on ‘CSI: Crime Scene Investigation’, ‘Psych’, ‘Hawaii Five-O’, ‘Franklin & Bash’ and ‘House’ among others.

Also added to the cast is Ian Gomez who will have a recurring role on the upcoming season as Snapper Carr, “a headstrong, sharp-witted newsman, hired by Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) to be the editor-in-chief of CatCo Magazine. Snapper’s commitment to hard-hitting journalism pushes CatCo reporters to dig deeper in the pursuit of excellence. He’s a man who tells people what he thinks of them, and his no-holds barred approach pushes Kara (Melissa Benoist) in unexpected ways.”

Gomez is also a familiar face to TV viewers, probably best known for playing wacky neighbor Andy on the long-running sitcom ‘Cougar Town’ (another show that switched from one network to another, coincidentally).  He may also be remembered as Javier on fan-favorite drama ‘Felicity’ and has made dozens and dozens of additional guest appearances.

The ‘Supergirl’ version of Snapper Carr does not appear to have any connection to the Justice League’s hepcat sidekick in early 1960s issues of their comic book.

Lima and Gomez join Hoechlin and Lynda Carter (TV’s Wonder Woman) who will play the President of the United States on the upcoming season.  Expect more ‘Supergirl’ news as SDCC approaches!
