The stakes are high for Warner Brothers, following the underwhelming theatrical performance of ‘Batman V Superman’.  The ‘Ultimate Edition’ of the film, including 30 minutes of bonus footage, was released today on VOD (the physical Blu-Ray comes out on July 19th, 2016) and there are high hopes that this expanded version will win over some who hated the theatrical film.  Last week, journalists from around the world were allowed an all-access visit to the set of ‘Justice League’, Zack Snyder‘s follow-up film.  (I wasn’t invited.  Just sayin’.)  And we already know WB plans to make a HUGE presentation at SDCC next month.  After ‘BvS”s weak (relatively speaking) performance, ‘Justice League’ HAS to do better or the studio may be screwed, since they put all their eggs in the DC Universe basket for the coming five years.

As such, don’t look for the typical shroud of secrecy to surround this film, the way you would, say, a ‘Star Wars’ movie.

The latest release is a piece of concept art that depicts the ‘JL’ lineup, including Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash, who only appeared in brief cameos in ‘BvS’.  Check it out below:

We’ve already seen Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) fully suited up and in action.  Unfortunately, Aquaman and Cyborg are the most covered in shadows.

hasbro_hookAquamanThe Flash, who will be played by Ezra Miller, looks pretty much how you’d expect him to.  His lightning chest emblem is obscured, so disappointingly, it doesn’t look like he’ll have the comic-accurate version like Grant Gustin wears on ‘The Flash’ TV show.  But maybe they are attempting to put some distance between the film and TV versions.

As we already knew from the brief glimpses we’ve already seen, plus the merchandising from ‘BvS’, Aquaman is based pretty much entirely on the “hook hand” version from the 90s comic books.  This may be disappointing to fans of the clean-cut “classic” version of the hero, but the 90s version was more action-oriented and a bit more aggressive, so it probably makes better sense in terms of a summer tentpole action flick.

In the comics, Cyborg has one of the fussiest designs of any superhero, so it’s not a shock that the movie actually appears to simplify him a bit.  Also not surprisingly, his face appears unmarred by cybernetic parts, which may prove distracting and could limit actor Ray Fisher’s performance.

Surely, we’ll get more detailed looks as production continues.

‘Justice League’ starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, Jason Momoa, Amy Adams, J.K. Simmons, Amber Heard, and Willem Dafoe opens in theaters on November 17, 2017.
