Weapon X

SPOILERS BELOW for anyone yet to see ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’

So while the latest ‘X-Men’ film is a little disappointing (in that it is a bit long and rather exhausting), it does have some intriguing elements that will most likely play into the future of the franchise. Aside from the obvious Jean Grey/Phoenix connection, there is Hugh Jackman’s cameo in the film, where he is freed from Stryker’s base after clearly having been turned into Weapon X. As the picture below shows, Singer and company borrowed heavily from the comics to find the right look for Weapon X Wolverine, and a lot of time in the film was devoted to freeing Wolverine and watching him rampage through Stryker’s men. Now while one might figure that since this is the last full ‘X-Men’ film Jackman would be appearing in, they maybe just wanted him to have a lot of film time, but it seems there is more to it than that. Singer has hinted that the Weapon X program might play heavily into ‘Wolverine 3,’ which would explain why the full concept was introduced in this film, so they can explore what exactly was going on in Wolverine’e solo film.

Of course, most are guessing that if ‘Wolverine 3’ does take place in the future (as hinted by all the rumors that it will be based on the ‘Old Man Logan’ arc from the comics), than anything to do with Weapon X will merely be flashbacks, but it might be more than that. There have also been rumors about the “current” iteration of Weapon X, “X-23,” might be appearing in ‘Wolverine 3,’ which means we might be seeing a lot more of the Weapon X facilities and story in the film than we thought.

What are your thoughts on what might happen in ‘Wolverine 3?’ Do you think his whole “tormented past” in regards to experimentation by Stryker is played out in the movie universe? (they relied heavily on it in ‘X-Men,’ ‘X2,’ ‘X-Men: Origins: Wolverine’ and in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’) Share your opinions on it all, and any theories you have for the film, in the comments section below!
