ghostbusters-2016-cast-proton-packs

In a recent interview over at Uproxx we read Judd Apatow (‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin’,’This Is 40′) make the most confusing political and cinematic quote of all time by basically saying those that hate the ‘Ghostbusters‘ reboot are Donald Trump supporters.

Now, I’m sure you are wondering on how such a political and cinematic clash could happen or how that could actually make sense. Let’s go to the full quote before we get any further:

“I would assume there’s a very large crossover of people who are doubtful Ghostbusters will be great and people excited about the Donald Trump candidacy. I would assume they are the exact same people. That movie is made by the great Paul Feig and stars the funniest people on Earth, so I couldn’t be more excited. I think people have paid too much attention to just some angry trolls. And it will be judged on its own greatness. I don’t think anything really matters the way you think it does. The movie comes out, and it will be great, and people will just be happy to have it. It’s not like anybody really cares about a couple of idiots who hold onto the idea that things never evolve. I always think, you know, we have our past and if you can come up with a new, cool way to do something, then that’s exciting and hopefully, it will make a lot of people happy.”

With that quote in mind, he doesn’t really go into specific detail on why ‘Ghostbusters’ haters are the same people who are excited for Trump’s candidacy for President of the United States. I’m sure comparisons could be drawn between Trump’s treatment of women to the negative comments about an all-female cast but he never directly makes that connection. It’s clear that those involved with the film are getting riled up as it feels in line with a comment that Melissa McCarthy saying the same people who hate it are “just sitting there and spewing hate into this fake world of the internet. I just hope they find a friend.”

While Apatow doesn’t have quite the same stake in the movie that McCarthy does, he has worked with many of those involved in the past.

Do you think Apatow has a valid point or is he going a little overboard in comparing movie and candidate preferences? Share your thoughts below!

‘Ghostbusters’ won’t be afraid of ghosts on July 15th, 2016. It is directed by Paul Feig and stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Charles Dance, Michael Kenneth Williams, and Chris Hemsworth.
