Legendary’s sequel to its giant mecha vs monster movie that Guillermo del Toro rocked the world with is steadily moving forward as ‘Pacific Rim 2‘ just picked up Derek Connolly (‘Jurassic World’,’Safety Not Guaranteed’) to write the script! Connolly had previously shown the world that he can pull off writing giant monsters considering the fact that he is also attached to ‘Kong: Skull Island’ and ‘Jurassic World 2’, so this should really come as no surprise. If anything, it makes me wonder if we’ll be seeing some giant monsters in ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ which he is also working on.

Clearly Hollywood has high hopes for Connolly’s writing career and genre fans everywhere are hoping that he can surpass his first venture into big budget films. The one area where ‘Jurassic World’ may have suffered from was character development and with Steven DeKnight (‘Daredevil’,’Spartacus: War of the Damned’) directing and being known for bringing some great characterization to the small screen, I suspect we’ll see ‘Pacific Rim 2’ quickly surpassing the original in quality.

Connolly won’t be jumping into the script blind though as drafts have already been put together by del Toro, Zak Penn, and Jon Spaihts so he’ll have a solid base to work off of while bringing the final script to completion. At this point, we don’t know if he is taking what was already put on paper and cleaning it up or starting from scratch.

While ‘Pacific Rim 2’ had been put on hold by Legendary Pictures it should come as no surprise that the film is being pushed forward. The studio has been purchased by the Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group. While ‘Pacific Rim‘ didn’t have the best domestic box office release, it was ticket sales in China that made a sequel possible in the first place.

Are you looking forward to ‘Pacific Rim 2’? Do you think that his work on ‘Jurassic World’ will help the film or were you not a fan? Share your thoughts below!
