No spandex here!
The stars of the original ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ sported form-fitting lycra suits with bulky motorcycle-esque helmets. For the 1995 movie, they got an upgrade with more padded uniforms.
We know ‘Saban’s Power Rangers’ is currently filming in Richmond, Canada and we’ve already seen Elizabeth Banks in full Rita Repulsa drag, while filming. We’ve also seen the Power Rangers in their civilian clothes and even a video of Australian actor Dacre (pronounced Day-ker, you’re welcome) Montgomery as Jason the Red Ranger in action.
Now, Lionsgate has officially released the first image of the Rangers in full uniforms and there is certainly a twist! Check out the new Rangers below:
Well, what do you think?
The ‘Iron Man’ influence is certainly visible. The old triple diamond motif has been streamlined, but the diamond chest logos are there, but combined with their dinosaur “coins.” The suits are described as “translucent extraterrestrial armor that crystallizes around their bodies.”
Production designer Andrew Menzies, seems to apologize to spandex purists, saying:
“Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.”
As director Dean Israelite describes:
“The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis. These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit.”
The new Rangers are mostly newcomers, Montgomery as Jason Lee Scott the Red Ranger, Naomi Scott as Kimberly Hart the Pink Ranger, Ludi Lin as Zack Taylor the Black Ranger, R.J. Cyler as Billy Cranston the Blue Ranger and Becky G. as Trini Kwan the Yellow Ranger. In addition to Banks, the film also features David Denman as Jason’s father Sam, Anjali Jay as Kimberly’s mother Maddy, Patrick Sabongui as Trini’s father and Lisa Berry as Billy’s mother Candace. Emily Madison plays a character named Rebecca.
The film arrives on March 24, 2017.
