‘Wonder Woman’ will cover a lot of bases, just as the comic book character lives in various worlds.  We know that ultimately, Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) winds up as a modern day superhero, but before that, we’ve seen footage of Gadot and Chris Pine set during World War I and, of course, the lead character hails from Themyscira an island inhabited by the Amazons, warrior women connected to the gods of ancient Greece.

To create an “otherworldy” look, the scenes on Themyscrira were filmed along Italy’s Amalfi coast as well as on some picturesque islands off the coast as well as on islands off the coast of south China.

According to producer Charles Roven:

“Themyscira is influenced by the Greek but it’s clearly more then that.  It’s a place that has the ‘you’ve never been to’ kind of feel. But once you’re there you’re not so sure you really want to leave so fast.”

Now, check out the first image of Themyscira’s inhabitants, the Amazons and learn a bit more about them.

Connie Nielsen plays Diana’s actual mother, Queen Hippolyta, while Robin Wright plays Hippolyta’s sister General Antiope and Lisa Loven Kongsli plays her her other sister Lieutenant Menalippe.  Together they raise Diana, the only child on the island.

According to ‘Wonder Woman”s director Patty Jenkins:

“She is the only child they raised together.  And their love for her manifests in a different way for each of them.”

As for the warriors’ overall look, Jenkins stated:

“To me, they shouldn’t be dressed in armor like men.  It should be different. It should be authentic and real—and appealing to women.”

That includes a decision that may bewilder many– the Amazons wear high heels!

Jenkins admits:

“It’s total wish-fulfillment.  I, as a woman, want Wonder Woman to be hot as hell, fight badass, and look great at the same time—the same way men want Superman to have huge pecs and an impractically big body. That makes them feel like the hero they want to be. And my hero, in my head, has really long legs.”

However, Jenkins clarified that the Amazons will wear flats during battle sequences.

Also, considering that ‘Batman V Superman’ and ‘Justice League’ director Zack Snyder broke the mold and presented an army of deadly men dressed like this:

It’s kind of hard to yell sexism if these female warriors are dressed a little impractically.

What do you think so far?  Do the Amazons look like unstoppable powerhouses?
