Batman v Superman

Oh look!  An R-Rated comic book super hero movie made $235 million in two weeks!  Maybe every comic book super hero movie should be Rated R too!

That didn’t take long.

Warner Brothers has announced that an R-Rated version of ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ will be available, but not in the theaters.  This cut, which features extended “sequences of violence” will be offered when  the movies comes out on home video in the ‘Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition’.  The movie itself doesn’t arrive in theaters until March 25, so no telling right now when the more violent version will be available to own.

Warner Brothers’ ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice’ will kick start WB’s new film franchise built around these characters.  Warner Brothers owns DC, the publisher of these comic books; and also, the second biggest comic book publisher in North America.

Deadpool thumbs up thumbThe #1 publisher is, of course, Marvel, who not only top DC in comic sales, but their movies have become a cultural phenomenon and merchandising bonanza.

DC has a leg up on Marvel, in the respect that their characters are at least somewhat better known.  Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman aren’t just comic book characters, but cultural icons.

But movies tho.

We all know Batman is a sure bet when it comes to theater-goers.  But 2013’s ‘Man of Steel’ under-performed and prior to that 2011’s ‘Green Lantern‘ downright FLOPPED.  What’s supremely ironic is that Ryan Reynold’s was the lead in both that turkey AND the record-breaking ‘Deadpool’.

Warner Brothers is clearly eyeing Marvel and related studio, 20th Century Fox, which produced ‘Deadpool’ the $235 million movie in question.

Warner Brothers insisted that they were not following Marvel’s pattern.  Marvel spent years releasing solo movies starring its heroes before combining them into the super hot mashup ‘The Avengers’.

Nope.  No way.  WB is not copying that formula.  You see, they’re going all in and throwing all of its headliners into ‘Batman V Superman’ before doing ‘Justice League – Part One’.  THEN they’re going to go back and fill in the blanks later with solo movies.

You guys, that’s like tooooooooootally different!  It’s like the total OPPOSITE or whatever!  Duh!

Like, the trailer for ‘Suicide Squad’ about a bunch of jailed criminals being sprung to go on a deadly mission is not even remotely similar to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘!  Also, #zany #madcap #ragtag #badguysasgoodguys #WHAT?!

Need a refresher?  Here:

And now ‘Deadpool’ has blown away every expectation; a hyper violent, sexually explicit, foul language-packed superhero movie outperformed the all-star, megahit movies that preceded it at the box office.  (In two weeks!)

Warner Brothers: Oh hey, moviegoers!  Over here!  You can sit with us!  We’re super cool!

Clearly ‘Guardians’ and ‘Deadpool’ figured out how to make comic book movies work!  #sex #violence #ratedr

Keep in mind, the extremely violent (though not gory) ‘Man of Steel’ carried a PG13 rating.  So this special edition promises to be even more violent-er than that!

Flipside, the violent climax was the part audiences HATED the most.

But hey, “Let’s just keep shoving more destruction down their throats and they’ll develop a taste for it.”

Is this a cool move?  Are DC fans more interested in a more violent ‘Batman V Superman’?  Or do you see DC’s heroes as the ultimate do-gooders that should not be sullied?  Comment below!
