Suicide Squad

It appears that Warner Brothers has taken a complete 180º turn in its marketing for ‘Suicide Squad’.  First came the colorful pop art posters, featuring cartoon-like illustrations of each major character, along with the tagline “Worst.  Heroes.  Ever.” Now comes the newest trailer which is stylistically NOTHING like the dark, moody first trailer that debut at SDCC last summer.  (You can watch it again HERE.)  In fact, for over a year, we’ve been hearing how this movie was going to expose the darker, grittier side of the DC Expanded Universe.  (Because ‘Batman V Superman’ looks like a real light-hearted romp.)

The new trailer, set to the tune of Queen’s epic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ turns up the color and… the humor.  In fact, if I didn’t know better, I’d think this was a trailer for an outright comedy! Near as I could tell, almost every frame of footage in this trailer is brand new, so that alone is worth the price of admission.

Check it out for yourself below:

It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

It’s hard to know what to expect out of ‘Suicide Squad’ now!  With Jared Leto as The Joker and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, we knew that this movie would have some element of humor, but now?  Is this a gritty action movie, starring a bunch of rough customers you don’t want to cross?  Or… like some violent, sexy, super antihero action comedy?  Because, I’m not sure anyone wants to see that…

Ummm, yeah.  I’m, uh sure it’s a complete coincidence that Fox has ‘Deadpool’ coming out, an R-rated adult comic book movie, which y’know just happens to be generating great buzz and that fans seem genuinely psyched about, while most folks are cautiously optimistic about Warner Brothers’ super offerings, at best. But clearly the two movies are nothing alike.  ‘Deadpool’ is just one guy.  There’s like a dozen characters in ‘Suicide Squad’.  So… completely different. What did you think of the new ‘Suicide Squad’ trailer?  Are you excited to see this movie?
