10 Cloverfield Lane

Almost nothing is known about ’10 Cloverfield Lane’, the follow up to the 2008 fan favorite ‘Cloverfield’ that pretty much no one realized was even being made.  The film comes from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot productions and was directed by Dan Trachtenberg with a script by Josh Campbell and Matt Steucken with rewrites from Dan Casey. The movie was kept top secret by shooting under a false name, ‘Valencia’ (changed from ‘The Cellar’).

‘The Cellar’ actually sounds like it could have worked as the story involves Mary Elizabeth Winstead as a woman who wakes up in the basement of a strange man, played by John Goodman, who tells her she cannot leave because the world outside his doors has become uninhabitable after a nuclear fallout.   John Gallagher, Jr. also stars.

Abrams has called ’10 Cloverfield Lane’ a “blood relative” of ‘Cloverfield’, a “found footage” movie that focuses on a group of New Yorkers attempting to survive the devastation of New York at the feet of gigantic monsters.  It’s unclear how ’10 Cloverfield Lane’ will connect to the first movie.  It isn’t shot in the (nausea-inducing) found footage style and the setting appears to be more rural or at least suburban.  How will the two movies connect?

We’ll have to wait to find out, but not for long.  In the meantime, here is the latest TV spot for it, which premiered during the Super Bowl:

’10 Cloverfield Lane’ is directed by Dan Trachtenberg and stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Gallagher, Jr., and Mat Vairo.  The film opens on March 11, 2017.
