Fans were outraged when so shortly after David Bowie‘s death we heard that Nicole Perlman (‘Guardians of the Galaxy’,’Thor’) was working on a reboot for ‘Labyrinth‘ and now she is denying that rumor.

That doesn’t mean that a ‘Labyrinth’ themed project isn’t in the works. Before anyone jumps the gun though it does appear that Perlman was in talks with The Henson Company for over a year which means that they were talking about this well before Bowie’s tragic death. The rumor came from The Hollywood Reporter which claimed that the fantasy epic was being “rebooted for the 21st century.” They further made mention that TriStar had “closed a deal with the Jim Henson Co to produce a new iteration” with Perlman on for writing the script.

While a project does appear to be in the works, Perlman is adamant that not only were talks happening while Bowie was still alive but that would never imagine rebooting what she still feels is a perfect movie. All I can imagine is that a sequel in the same world was what was in mind but I’m not sure that I could imagine a draw to returning to the ‘Labyrinth’ without Jareth, the Goblin King. While Perlman couldn’t deliver specifics (as I’m sure NDAs are involved) she did have the following to say:

I’m not exactly thrilled that they are going to return ot the world that was created here, but at least we can all breathe a sigh of relief that it won’t be a sequel. Perlman has proven with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ that she can deliver creative wit which would help with the dialogue of the world’s inhabitants but I would need to know more before I could be sold on having much interest in the project. There is obviously no word as to if Bowie would have been involved in this new project or if his passing has derailed it before it could really begin.

Are you happy to hear that ‘Labyrinth’ isn’t being rebooted? Do you think a sequel could be interesting after all this time and likely not including any of the original key actors? Share your thoughts below!
