SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ as well as from the trailer.  Proceed with caution!

Last week, not only were fans treated to the moody ‘Batman V Superman’ movie trailer, but a teaser for the trailer which was released just a few days beforehand and included an uncut scene from the movie, bits of which were later included in the trailer.  The controversial sequence that had viewers buzzing was one in which Superman (Henry Cavill) arrives in the desert, with human soldiers bowing before him, before he rips off Batman’s cowl, exposing his secret identity– Bruce Wayne, played by Ben Affleck.

Without any context, fans wondered what the story was behind this unmasking, but many correctly surmised that this was a dream sequence and now that has been confirmed by Michael Wilkinson, the film’s costume designer.

Wilkinson spoke in depth about designing the suits for this movie and the fact that the Batman seen in the desert sequence is wearing a different uniform than Affleck is shown sporting in the rest of the clips revealed, and in doing so confirmed that the controversial scene is a dream and explains how it fits into the film’s narrative:

“It is a different look. Zack had a great idea of this sort of nightmare-ish vision, almost a vision of the future, a post-apocalyptic vision. It’s like a dream that Ben has, so we wanted to, it has almost a Mad Max quality to it where it’s like the end of the world, trying to survive and then of course Superman and his minions come, so it’s sort of a way of representing the amazing amounts of, the sort of obsessive quality that Bruce Wayne has about the threat of Superman. In this film, Superman, of course he’s normally seen as a figure of hope, a positive thing, but in this film, his motivations, the consequences of his actions are really being questioned by the world. Is he a savior? Or is he a dangerous alien with unknown intentions? And this becomes an obsession for Bruce Wayne. And he really wants to sort it out. So, it’s manifested in this sort of incredible dream that Zack decided to create.”

Among other tidbits teased by the costume designer is confirmation that The Flash appears, but he states that he hasn’t really gotten to design a proper suit for star Ezra Miller, so it sounds as if the earlier rumors that The Flash only appears on a TV monitor as a blur zipping around may be true.

What do you think?  Is a dream sequence a cop out?  Or does it make sense in the grand scheme of things?  Or are you waiting until the movie’s release to form a concise opinion?  Comment below!
