SPOILERS AHEAD (both for those who haven’t finished ‘The Flash’ Season 1 and those who want to go into Season 2 spoiler free)

Fans were both delighted and saddened when it was revealed that Tom Cavanagh’s Harrison Welles was both The Reverse Flash and Eobard Thawne at the end of ‘The Flash’ Season 1, as with the characters defeat (and death/erasure from the timeline) it was thought that the show would lose Cavanagh from its cast, which would be a tremendous loss after the excellent work the actor put in during the freshmen season of the series. Fortunately, during the summer we learned that Mr. Cavanagh would still be a main cast member during the second season of the show, which left it up to fan speculation on how he would still be a part of the series. Would the Reverse Flash be making a come-back? Would the original Harrison Welles now still be alive in this timeline since Eobard Thawne has now been erased?

Now at last we have some answers, starting with a statement from one of the show’s executive producers, Gabrielle Stanton, who states it will be a different Dr. Welles than what we saw before:

“Harrison Wells will be back, but he’s going to be a very different Harrison Wells than we’ve seen before…We’ve got other worlds. We’ve got other timelines. All I’m going to say is he’s from one of those places.”

So most likely the Harrison Welles of ‘The Flash’ season 2 will be from Earth 2 (which is where the show’s Jay Garrick will be appearing from as well I think), meaning he comes from a dimension/timeline where Eobard Thawne did not murder him and take over his life. But will he still be the same lovable curmudgeon we grew to respect in Season 1? No matter what, Tom Cavanagh has a lot of work ahead of him, recreating a character from scratch after having spent a season playing a different version of him.
