Ever since Josh Trank departed the second ‘Star Wars Anthology’ film back in May, there has been a whirlwind of news and rumors emerging regarding the upcoming spinoff. From the circumstances surrounding his departure to the subject of the film, we’ve heard a ton of unconfirmed and at times conflicting reports about this movie in the past. But now we have an official report stating which character’s origin will be told, along with the details regarding the writers and directors. And based on this news, everything is awesome.

According to StarWars.com, Christopher Miller and Phil Lord will be helming the spinoff written by Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon Kasdan that focuses on how a young Han Solo became the infamous smuggler, thief, and hero that we’ve all come to know and love today.

Thanks to their work on ‘The Lego Movie’, ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’, and the ’21 Jump Street’ franchise, Miller and Lord have become two of the most sought after filmmakers in Hollywood. The duo is currently developing a solo film for DC Comics superhero The Flash at Warner Bros. and an animated Spider-Man project for Marvel/Sony/Disney, in addition to planning another ‘Jump Street’ movie potentially crossing over with ‘Men In Black’. But now that they’re lined up to tackle one of the most iconic characters in all of cinematic history, the duo is stoked to direct Solo’s spinoff regardless of their full slate:

“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”

As for the writers, the legendary Lawrence Kasdan is known for his work on such classics as ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’, ‘The Big Chill’, and ‘Grand Canyon’, however, ‘Star Wars’ fans are likely more familiar with his contributions to ‘The Empire Strikes Back’, ‘Return of the Jedi’, and ‘The Force Awakens’. His son Jon is also a writer and director with credits that include classic TV shows ‘Freaks and Geeks’ and ‘Dawson’s Creek’.

Just like the rest of us, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy is looking forward to seeing what these talented individuals have in store for the ‘Star Wars Anthology’ film scheduled for May 25, 2018. Here’s what she had to say about the team assembled to delve into Solo’s early life:

“It’s not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I’m excited to say we’ve found the perfect team to handle the task. Larry and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han’s story.”

With all this out in the open, now we anxiously await the casting announcement that tells us who the new Han Solo is. Considering Lord and Miller’s past with him and his experience playing a space scoundrel, could Chris Pratt be in the running? After all, people are throwing his name around to play Indiana Jones, another role originated by Harrison Ford. Well, while that detail is still forthcoming, along with whether or not we’ll see the Kessel Run or Han’s first time meeting Chewbacca, share your thoughts on Han Solo’s upcoming ‘Star Wars Anthology’ film and the filmmakers making it happen.
