‘Spy’ (and future ‘Ghostbuster’) director Paul Feig  recently sat down with ‘Allocine‘ to discuss his upcoming action/comedy ‘Spy,’ and is usually the case with these interviews, they wanted to know about his future projects, namely ‘Ghostbusters.’ Feig discussed how he felt a certain awkwardness at trying to do a sequel to the original films, or even another movie based on the same continuity. In his own words:

“I thought I’d rather do it as a reboot, so I wasn’t tied to the old movies. The old movies are so good, I didn’t want to mess with them. I also want to see the beginnings of this group. I want to see people seeing ghosts for the first time, and how they are going to fight them for the first time, how they develop their technology.”

Feig then goes on the discuss how he had actually turned down the job of directing ‘Ghostbusters 3’ several times before sitting down and really thinking about what it would take for him to take on the franchise, and how exactly he would like to tackle that. He figured that working with funny women was right in his wheelhouse, and it would be an interesting spin on the ‘Ghostbusters’ world, and that is what eventually got him to take on the reboot.

As a fan, I’m still on the fence about the new ‘Ghostbusters’ all female adaptation, but I commend Feig on sticking to his guns, and making plans to ensure he makes the best possible movie he can. It seems he’s as much a fan as the rest of us, and a lot of his reasoning behind rebooting the franchise and changing so much is to ensure he does not mess with the ideas and actors behind the original movies, claiming that if you want to see Ray, Egon, Peter and Winston nowadays, you can simple pop in the DVD and rewatch the masterpiece, the idea being that if he were to make a sequel or reboot with those characters, he felt it might taint our original memories.

What are your thoughts on the new ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise? Is Feig the right man to bring the series back from the dead? Let us know your opinion below!

The all female ‘Ghostbusters’ film is scheduled to be released on July 22, 2016.
