WARNING: Potential ‘Captain America: Civil War’ Spoilers Ahead!
Well, it seems that the run of a certain romance in the MCU might just be at an end, though the dissolution of the relationship may or may not be a factor in how everything shakes out in ‘Captain America: Civil War.’
It turns out that despite rumors to the contrary, Gwyneth Paltrow’s character of Pepper Potts will not be seen in ‘Civil War,’ and her absence is explained away as her having broken up with Tony Stark, due to not being able to deal with Stark’s larger than life personality any longer. Of course, the immediate question that comes to my mind is whether the move was made because they could not get Paltrow to come back (apparently she is very busy with her lifestyle brand “Goop”), or whether they needed her and Tony to break up to add some gravitas to Tony’s decisions in ‘Civil War.’ Cause if you think about it, Pepper always had a way of calming down Tony and making him see things from another perspective, and if she were still around, he might not have gone so gung-ho about the Sokovia Accords and putting down the Winter Soldier. Plus Tony being in a more emotionally fragile state over the loss of his long-term girlfriend also helps explain his disposition in the film and why he is so quick to jump into a new project like the Sokovia Accords and working with the government.
When last we saw Pepper Potts in the MCU, she had just taken down Aldrich Killian at the end of ‘Iron Man 3,’ though she is mentioned during ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron‘ as still being Tony’s girlfriend, so something clearly has happened between ‘Age of Ultron’ and ‘Civil War’ that split them up.
Was she was angry when she found out that Tony created Ultron? Who knows, but I personally will be kind of sad to not see Pepper in the MCU anymore (if she is truly out), as I enjoyed her relationship with Tony, and enjoyed the idea of her running the company so Tony could live his life as Iron Man.
