BB-8 is already the biggest star in the world and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ has yet to be released. While it’s to be expected that a BB-8 toy is on the horizon, if you’re too impatient, you can make one of your very own.

While many people thought BB-8 was a CG creation, its appearance at last week’s Star Wars Celebration proved otherwise. The droid was actually developed by Sphero, a tech startup that was part of Disney’s “accelerator” program. Sphero is a company founded by robotics and software engineers dedicated to what is known as Connected Play. Their main product, the Sphero, is a robotic ball with many entertainment applications all of which can be controlled on your smartphone. You can take a look at how the Sphero works in the video below. It’s actually pretty neat.

To make your own BB-8, you would need to put a magnet inside a Sphero along with another magnet inside a foam dome. And of course, you would need to add a little paint to the exterior. It might take a bit of time and money to make it work. However, for die-hard fans, it may be worth it.
