The first big casting news from ‘Star Trek 3’ has arrived! Sofia Boutella (‘Kingsman: The Secret Service‘,’Monsters: Dark Continent‘) has officially joined the film! While a relatively new actress to western audiences, she has already proven herself to be more than capable of having a commanding presence in a movie.

As of yet, there is no specific hint as to what her role in the film is quite yet though she has been described as having “a lead role” so we can’t really wager as to if she’ll be playing a villain, Starfleet officer, or love interest of one of the characters at this time. That being, with how amazing her role was as Gazelle in ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service,’ she would make for a perfect main villain in the upcoming film. That is assuming Idris Elba’s rumored casting doesn’t mean that he’ll be the only major villain.

If she did end up at odds with Kirk, it wouldn’t be the first time that the good captain mixed enemies with pleasure.

Of course, the villain idea is probably more of wishful thinking as it is more likely that she has accepted one of the three female leads that were rumored to be previously open for casting.

The breakdown of the three are:

  • A female captain of another Starfleet ship
  • The president of the United Federation of Planets
  • Dr. ‘Bones’ McCoy’s ex-wife

It should be noted that the second option was originally mentioned to be an older actress. I could quite easily see Boutella being set for the unnamed captain or Bones ex-wife though I would hope that whichever part she plays it ends up as a major one.

With Simon Pegg penning the next installment, the only details that he has shared so far is that he plans to “take it forward with the spirit of the TV show.” With that in mind, expect whoever Kirk and crew to be up against to have a “story about frontierism and adventure and optimism and fun.”

Which of the three roles above do you feel that Sofia Boutella would best fit? Share your thoughts below!

‘Star Trek 3’ starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, and Simon Pegg opens in theaters on July 8, 2016.
