The biggest hit of last summer is still fresh on everyone’s minds as we approach the current blockbuster summer season, a fact illustrated by the excitement about the sequel to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘ and the slew of questions being thrown at director James Gunn as he prepares the next film. During a recent Q&A, Gunn divulged that Nebula will definitely be returning for the sequel, which made a lot of fans happy as she was an instant fan-favorite during the original. Aside from the core 5 (Peter Quill, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Racoon, Groot, and Gamora), Nebula is the only confirmed returning cast member and only returning villain, which makes sense as she was the only villain not killed during the original. While she did lose her hand while hanging from the ship after being bested by Gamora, Nebula escaped by dropping down and hijacking a passing ship, making her an active threat for the future. Plus we all knew she was one of Gunn’s favorite characters, which was helped by the fact that she was played by the amazing Karen Gillan.
As for the script itself, Gunn has stated that he has turned in a treatment to the folks at Marvel, and has begun work on the actual script now, claiming that it is coming along fast as he already has 70 or so pages. With the Nebula news many fans are wondering what role she will have in the script exactly, especially with her rich comics backstory and childhood connection to Gamora, which was not explored in much detail in the first ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ It would be interesting to see more about their growing up as children of the Mad Titan Thanos, but whether or not that will fit into the plot of the second movie only Gunn knows as this point.
So what are your thoughts on Nebula returning to the franchise? Are you disappointed not to see Ronan return as well? Let us know in the comments below!
