Netflix has renewed the Marvel Comics-based crime drama ‘Jessica Jones’ for a third season. The series was created by Melissa Rosenberg who serves as the showrunner. Krysten Ritter stars as the titular hard-drinking, indestructible private eye, with Rachael Taylor, Eka Darville and Carrie-Anne Moss. co-starring in the series. Season Two premiered a little over a month ago but has performed well enough for another helping. ‘Jessica Jones’ is the second Marvel show on Netflix to earn a third season, following ‘Daredevil’, but most likely won’t be the last, as ‘Luke Cage’ returns for its sophomore season on June 22. (Now ‘Iron Fist’? That could be another story…) Rosenberg also serves as executive producer on the series along with Marvel Television’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory. The series is produced by Marvel Television and ABC Studios.
‘Jessica Jones’ was the second Marvel original series from Netflix, following ‘Daredevil’. The shows reveal a darker side of the Marvel Universe, versus the lighter, more family-friendly movies. The four leads, Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist starred in the crossover series ‘The Defenders’ which appears to have been a one-off series. ‘Daredevil’ was popular enough to earn a spinoff for ‘The Punisher’ which stars Jon Bernthal. That series was also popular enough to be renewed for a second season.
At the close of Season Two, Jessica seemed to be drifting toward a semblance of a regular life, but her relationships with her two closest confidantes Trish (Taylor) and Malcolm (Darville) were on the outs. It also appeared that Trish may have gained super abilities, bringing her more in line with the comic book inspiration for her character, Patsy Walker a.k.a. the Avenger/Defender known as Hellcat.
In Season One, Jessica was terrorized by David Tennant‘s Zebediah Kilgrave, a.k.a the Purple Man and his spectre continued to haunt her in Season Two. However, the main antagonist turned out to be Alisa Jones, played by Janet McTeer. Jones turned out to have a VERY close connection to Jessica. Considering that Jessica Jones is a relatively new character, compared to her fellow Netflix stars, she doesn’t have a deep rogues gallery, so it’s anybody’s guess who will menace her in Season Three.
Are you happy to get a third batch of ‘Jessica Jones’?
