Chances are that whenever you’ve heard the names Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac lately, it’s been related to ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’ However, they have another really interesting sci-fi film coming out in 2015 that has people talking and is popping up on a few most anticipated of the year lists. This movie is ‘Ex Machina,’ the directorial debut of ‘Dredd’ and ’28 Days Later’ screenwriter Alex Garland that features two scientific types experimenting on a revolutionary robotics project. On paper, the premise sounded like it could go either way, but after the trailer dropped, it became quite clear that we should have something really awesome coming our way in the spring. But before it makes its way to North America, UK theaters will get to check out the film in a few short weeks. In anticipation for that release, the studio has released a new clip introducing us to the incredible A.I. named Ava.
After appearing in acclaimed films like ‘A Royal Affair,’ ‘Anna Karenina’ and ‘The Fifth Estate,’ Alicia Vikander is well on her way up the Hollywood ladder. Aside from roles in the upcoming ‘Seventh Son’ and ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,’ she also stars as the robotic female lead in ‘Ex Machina.’ The Swedish actress is without a doubt a stunning vision normally, but when you see her as Ava in the various promotional material for her latest film, there are just no words for how incredibly realistic she looks. Now, we get to meet the scientific marvel for the first time thanks to a clip from Yahoo UK. In the video, we join Gleeson’s Caleb Smith as he meets Ava for the first time to start administering the Turing Test, which is meant to see if a robot exhibits “intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human.” You can check it out below, followed by the official synopsis of the film:
Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company’s brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test – charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated, seductive––and more deceptive––than the two men could have imagined.
Though it’s only a short peek into this world created by writer and director Garland, it’s enough to spark so much intrigue and curiosity. I can already tell that this will be one of those films that I’ll want to watch every special feature for so that I can see how the filmmakers achieved the look of the whole thing. But what do you think of this clip from ‘Ex Machina’? Are you excited for the film to make it’s way across the pond and into our movie theaters? Let us know in the comment section.
