There are so many adaptations of Mary Shelley’s classic novel in the works that hearing about ‘The Frankenstein Chronicles’ might be quickly ignored if it weren’t for the fact that Sean Bean (‘Game of Thrones‘,’The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring’) has a starring role in it. The new take on the scientist and monster dynamic is going to put the entire view on its head as it will be portrayed as a crime drama on ITV, a UK network.

With Bean in the starring role, does this mean we can actually see him live for a full season without being killed? Rare these days in the world of Bean who has died on screen more than most other actors.

The series is set to be a six-part episode and it will take place in 1827 where we see Bean playing Inspector John Marlott who is investigating what will end up being a major crime. While Marlott will initially be taking a singular case, he is quickly taken off path when a child’s corpse is discovered which was made of different body parts that were sewn together “in a grotesque parody of a human form.” In each episode we will see Marlott working the case as he attempts to find what kind of a crazy killer would do such a thing.

The early working synopsis goes as follows:

Marlott’s investigation takes him into the dark corners of Regency London…He discovers an underworld of prostitution, drug smuggling, bodysnatching and murder for profit. The rational evidence points first one way and then another as he contemplates a frightening alternate scenario.

While there is no US distribution in place quite yet, it wouldn’t surprise me to see it get picked up somewhere pretty quickly with the mixture of Sean Bean, horror, mystery, and Frankenstein. It doesn’t help that Bean is always a popular actor and will be getting even more notice as he stars in the upcoming films ‘Jupiter Ascending‘ and ‘The Martian.’

‘The Frankenstein Chronicles’ is set to begin filming in January of 2015 and we’ll share more about it as it is revealed. As interesting as it sounds though it will have to compete with a slew of upcoming films including fox’s ‘Victor Frankenstein‘ which is set to star Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy, Universal Picture’s ‘Frankenstein‘ reboot, Mike Mignola set to unleah the character in ‘Frankenstein Underground‘, and more!

What do you think of the news of ‘The Frankenstein Chronicles’? Are you eager to see Bean look for the mad scientist or are you all monstered out?
