While Tony Stark vs Steve Rogers will probably be the focal point of ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ it seems that Frank Grillo wil be suiting up again as Crossbones and will be the central villain in the film.

The last rumor we heard about Grillo is that he would be popping up in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron.’ Of course that was reported so long ago we all still thought Thanos would be the main villain at that time, so who is to say how accurate that still is? Grillo did, however, previously stated that ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘ was going to be the “origin film for the character and is clearly one that we’ll be seeing again.

Variety reporter, Justin Kroll, was talking about the addition of a new villain to ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and stressed that:

This “beat by Marvel” comment was in reference to Marvel making an official announcement about a new cast member to the film instead of responding to the rumors that it had happened.

I’m really curious what the fall out from the film will be as it kicks off the official slate of Marvel’s Phase 3 films in its cinematic universe. What should also prove interesting is that if Crossbones is the main villain of the film, you have to wonder what villain Danial Bruhl just signed up for to play. Not that the studio has had any problems juggling multiple villains in their movies so far. I’m still hoping that they’ll be taking advantage of his German heritage and having him play Baron Zemo.

Major potential spoiler filled theory below.

What this could mean is if they take parts of the story directly from the comic, Crossbones plays a major role as the events of ‘Civil War’ are coming to a close. After Steve Rogers turns himself in, he apparently ends up being killed and the man who pulls the trigger? None other than Crossbones himself in a plan hatched by the Red Skull. Even if he isn’t a major villain throughout most of the film, this very act could have him considered to be just that as the credits come to a close. I doubt this will be how it plays out as we still need Steve Rogers for ‘The Avengers: Infinity War’ films but this could be quite the shocker if it did end up on screen.

What are are your thoughts on a reporter saying completely matter of fact that we’ll be seeing a return of Crossbones and as the lead enemy of our heroes? Will he be fighting them throughout the movie or is this a reference to his actions with a single sniper rifle as the curtain falls. Share your thoughts below true believers!
