We’ve known that Dwayne Johnson was set to have a role in ‘Shazam‘ and today that role has been formally announced! Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is officially set to play Black Adam on the film! His last update was that he wasn’t sure if he would be playing Shazam or his arch-enemy and now it looks as if the anti-hero has won out.

As pre-production is still very early we can’t share a plot with you yet as a writer, director, and release date are all still very much unannounced at this time. Considering DC has 9 unannounced films set between 2016-2020 I highly suspect that is the date range we’ll see this one fall into. While I think his usual jovial self would be a far better fit in the somewhat more carefree Marvel movies, you can’t deny that he has the build and attitude to be able to pull off this role. Also this is a character that could potentially have a strong fit in the overall cinematic universe that DC is working at building. Who says he can’t take on Superman at some point and not just Shazam?

Here is the official announcement from Twitter:

In the comics, his first name was Teth-Adam of Kahndaq and first appeared in ‘Marvel Family’ #1 back in 1945, but he is primarily known to most as Black Adam. A villain, an anti-hero, and an all around complex role means we’ll be able to see Johnson flex his acting, muscles, and signature eyebrow lift to truly take on the nature of the hero. I have a feeling that while they will start him off evil, by the end of the first film or potentially in the second we’ll see his nature start to change.

Are you looking forward to checking out ‘Shazam’ now that we know Johnson will portray the villain in the series? Happy that there is no more doubt as to which character he’ll be taking on? Share your thoughts below!
