We haven’t heard much about ‘The Stand‘ since we reported that Josh Boone (‘Stuck in Love’,’The Fault in Our Stars’) would be taking over on writing and directing duties for the film, but now it sounds like the first major casting choice might soon be announced. It looks like Boone and Warner Brothers are eyeing Matthew McConaughey to take on the iconic role of Randall Flagg! Flagg is a pure personification of evil and Stephen King has used this enigmatic being in a multitude of his novels from ‘The Stand’, ‘The Eyes of the Dragon’, ‘Hearts in Atlantis’, and several of the ‘Dark Tower’ novels.

At this point I would like to mention that this casting is by no means concrete and no contracts have been signed, however with Flagg not just being the personification of evil but also a true sociopath, it would be really fun to see McConaughey take up the role. You need someone who can play brilliant, evil, and charismatic all at once. McConaughey has shown that he can easily adapt all of those traits and I think blending them together would be child’s play for him.

Do you think Matthew McConaughey would be able to play Randall Flagg the way he needs to be played? Are you looking forward to a new adaptation for Stephen King’s ‘The Stand’ or is a movie just not long enough to make this work well? Share your thoughts below!

Novel Synopsis:

When a man escapes from a biological testing facility, he sets in motion a deadly domino effect, spreading a mutated strain of the flu that will wipe out 99 percent of humanity within a few weeks. The survivors who remain are scared, bewildered, and in need of a leader. Two emerge–Mother Abagail, the benevolent 108-year-old woman who urges them to build a community in Boulder, Colorado; and Randall Flagg, the nefarious “Dark Man,” who delights in chaos and violence.
