Horror films are usually released around Halloween, so it’s a real treat when you don’t have to wait until Fall to see a really good ghost story. This is the case with ‘The Awakening.’

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and although it has already been released in the UK, it is only recently making its US debut. The film will be in limited theater release but thanks to the Cohen Media Group, you can watch the first 10 minutes and a special clip of ‘The Awakening’ online!

The film follows ghost hunter Florence Cathcart who is asked to investigate a haunted boarding school. The 10 minute footage quickly sets up the character of Cathcart as well as the invitation extended to her to inspect the school thus establishing the film’s intriguing and unsettling premise.

If 10 minutes of the film were not enough, we also have a clip of Cathcart as she is in the midst of setting up tests at the boarding school to disprove that it is haunted.

Here’s the official synopsis of the film:

Set in London in 1921, Florence Cathcart (Rebecca Hall), author of the popular book “Seeing Through Ghosts,” has devoted her career to exposing claims of the supernatural as nothing but hoaxes. Haunted by the recent death of her fiancé, she is approached by Robert Mallory (Dominic West) to investigate the recent death of a student at the all-boys boarding school where he teaches. When students at the school report sightings of the young boy’s ghost, she decides to take on the case. Initially, the mystery surrounding the ghost appears nothing more than a schoolboy prank, but as Florence continues to investigate events at the school, she begins to believe that her reliance on science may not be enough to explain the strange phenomenon going on around her.

‘The Awakening’ is not an “in your face” type of horror film and relies on suspense and anticipation for the scares. In a time when horror is akin to blood and gore, it’s refreshing to just get scared by a good ol’ fashioned ghost story.
