Gamescon is dropping some great stuff! Among the cool games presented, ‘Quantum Break’ presented its first extended gameplay trailer since it was announced at E3 in 2013.
In truth, the only way ‘Quantum Break’ resembles Remedy Entertainment’s previous release (‘Alan Wake’) is its third-person shooter interface. In truth, I’ve no real problem with that as Wake’s gameplay was fairly fluid and easy to master.
In a direct quote from the Xbox ‘Quantum Break’ site,
A revolutionary entertainment experience that blurs the line between television and gaming. With ‘Quantum Break,’ Remedy Games delivers an action-packed, fast paced game in which you bend and shape time in order to survive. Master unique powers, bending and warping time to outmaneuver and outwit the enemy. Epic moments of destruction, captured in time, become your playground.
Our hero, Jack Joyce, is a leather jacket clad cross between Alan Wake and Max Payne. Joyce’s limited control of “time manipulation” allows for freezing of his enemies on a temporary basis. Already I can see some great gameplay scenarios forming in my mind. Much to the tune of ‘Doctor Who‘ and ‘Torchwood,’ our hero is fighting to prevent the end of time itself.
This time manipulation is referred to in-game as “stutters” and in a spectacular effect essentially freezes in place everything around the perimeter of the area of effect. Our antagonist, the Monarch Corporation, has developed the ability to traverse these stutters. This leads to a very surreal showdown within the time displacement itself, so you can imagine how awesome this scenario could be. According to Sam Lake, Remedy Entertainment’s Creative Director, “In the show, in the style of a modern, edgy TV series you follow the schemes and power play inside Monarch, the Corporation that’s Jack’s main enemy.”
Although Alan Wake fans have yet to receive their sequel game, they should rejoice, at least momentarily, in the fact that the ‘Quantum Break’ gameplay is very similar. ‘Quantum Break’ carries the familiar narrative commentary throughout the game, the combination of sorcery and firearms too will be similar.
