According to a new press release making it’s rounds, Telltale Games has teamed with HBO to produce “an interactive episodic game series” based on the ‘Game of Thrones’ television series. After enthralling audiences with games based on the classic film trilogy ‘Back to the Future’, the popular DC comic ‘Fables’, and the hit zombie comic series ‘The Walking Dead’, the gaming company is looking to apply their model of successful innovative video games to the acclaimed fantasy drama based on George R. R. Martin’s ‘A Song of Fire & Ice’ novels.

Similar to the much talked about game based on the works of Robert Kirkman, Telltale is developing a new video game for consoles, computers, and mobile devices featuring the inhabitants of Westeros that will depend on morally ambiguous choices, which seems like the perfect fit for the likes of the Lannisters. Telltale Games co-founder and CEO Dan Connors seems to think so as well:

“Since the very beginning, Telltale’s goal has been to work alongside the most talented and respected forces in entertainment, bringing their worlds to the interactive space as no other game studio can. Working with HBO to develop a new game series based on ‘Game of Thrones’ is a natural fit for our studio. This partnership will create an experience that will captivate the huge, global ‘Game of Thrones’ audience. It will put them in control of the epic stories of warfare, intrigue, violence and revenge that we know and love.”

When the various episodes of ‘The Walking Dead: Season One’ came out last year, I recall it being all that my friends could talk about because the gameplay was incredibly immersive and so different from any other mobile game out there. HBO Director of Global Licensing Josh Goodstadt makes it sound like that’s exactly what they’re going for with the game based on the Emmy Award-winning show as well:

“We’re delighted to be working with Telltale Games, a proven leader in the creation of engaging interactive content. Our fans are always looking for new, exciting ways to engage with the Game of Thrones brand and this game series will put them right in the middle of the action by letting them decide where the story will lead. This brings a whole new dimension to the world of Westeros.”

Currently, the details of the story and a release date for the first episode of the game have not been announced, but it will be distributed digitally at some point next year. However, an educated guess might place the game’s debut around Spring 2014, which is when the TV show returns to HBO.

What do you think will be the focus of Telltale Games’ newest project? Do you see it only loosely connecting to ‘Game of Thrones’ and the characters that we’ve come to know and love on the show? If so, are there any characters that you feel should absolutely make appearances? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments.
