Mourn Another 'Game Of Thrones' Passing As HBO Edits Out The Infamous "Starbucks" Cup

Fans of ‘Game of Thrones’ have had to say goodbye to a few favorite characters in its final season.  Now another, newer favorite can be added to that list of the dearly departed, as the infamous modern coffee cup that somehow got left in a scene of the most recent episode, and subsequently launched a thousand memes, has been quietly edited out for viewers of HBO Go and HBO Now.  Although it has widely been referred to as a Starbucks cup, it has since been determined that it came from the show’s craft services department.  (BECAUSE THAT MAKES IT BETTER!!!)

You can see a capture of the retouched scene below:

HBO jokingly issued the statement:

“The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.”

While that implies that the network is taking this blunder in stride, some insiders state that the network is humiliated, especially considering the length of time it took to craft these final episodes and how important they are to the network’s most popular show ever.  (It is, in fact, one of the most popular shows on any network ever.)  With the usual intense attention to detail and high craftsmanship that go into creating ‘GoT’, it’s hard to comprehend how no one caught the presence of the cup on the set, much less in post-production.

One of the ‘GoT’ art directors, Hauke Richter, calls the gaff “so blown out of proportion [because] it has not happened with ‘Thrones’ so far.”  (But it happened THIS time, didn’t it?!)

For their part, despite the mistaken attribution, Starbucks seized the opportunity to plug one of their new summer beverages:

“TBH we’re surprised she didn’t order a Dragon Drink,” which includes “a scoop of real diced dragon fruit.”

Catch ‘Game of Thrones’, brought to you next week by Burger King, Sundays on HBO.
