Usually when we’ve brought up ‘Ghostbusters 3’ in the past it’s been a slew of bad news, usually revolving around Bill Murray (‘Zombieland’) not being attached to the project. So these days anytime I hear a piece of news from the on again off again sequel to 1989’s ‘Ghostbusters 2’ I cringe internally. It’s only a matter of time before it gets shot down as another rumor which ends up with the film just not happening. So why am I excited about these two new rumors? Well it seems that within a short time frame we found out not only on a location and time they want to start production,  but also the two new leads who were offered roles in the movie. Different rumors, separate sources, and right around the same time? We might just have something here.

Are we going somewhere with the movie this time? It’s too early to tell, but let’s see what the rumor mill is telling us this time around. It’s also too early to tell if this one will get most of the old gang back together or will be a fresh take on the series. I’m pretty sure any take without a majority of the original members is going to lead only to low box office sales and hate mail from fans of the original two movies worldwide.

It appears that according to an unnamed Sony executive involved with the film, ‘Ghostbusters 3’ is looking to shoot in Cleveland and begin production in Spring of 2014! As Cleveland has been used as New York in other films such as ‘The Avengers‘ and ‘Spider-Man 3’ it would be a great location to pick.

Now on to some casting rumors. No, nothing about Bill Murray (he’s still out last we heard.) What it does seems like. though. is that Jonah Hill (‘This Is the End‘, ‘The Watch’) and Emma Stone (‘The Amazing Spider-Man‘, Zombieland‘) have been offered the roles of Jeremy and Anna. While there are no details on who these characters might be, I would suspect they are going to be either the new Ghostbusters that join up with the old ones or researchers at Columbia University who stumble across the new ghost problem if Dan Aykroyd’s openly admitted plot details are still accurate:

“It’s based on new research that’s being done in particle physics by the young men and women at Columbia University. […] Basically, there’s research being done that I can say that the world or the dimension that we live in, our four planes of existence, length, height, width and time, become threatened by some of the research that’s being done. Ghostbusters — new Ghostbusters — have to come and solve the problem.”

So are these two rumors being released at the same time by different sources a sign of things to come? Are we finally getting a ‘Ghostbusters 3’? Or is this going to end up as just another piece of wishful thinking that we’ll see this classic set of movies turned into a trilogy?
