‘Red She-Hulk’ was recently cancelled, as was ‘Journey Into Mystery’ starring Sif and perhaps even ‘Captain Marvel’ (not confirmed, but also not solicited for two months) which would take Marvel’s roster of solo female titles down to… well zero.
But stalwart hero (green) She-Hulk is returning to a monthly book. The new series will be scripted by Charles Soule with art by Javier Pulido. The new series will launch next year.
This will mark the fifth time Jennifer Walters (cousin of Bruce Banner a.k.a. The Incredible Hulk) has headlined her own series, beginning with ‘The Savage She-Hulk’ in 1980 and carrying on to ‘The Sensational She-Hulk’ in 1989 and, of course three other relaunches. She is currently starring in ‘FF’ (the Fantastic Four).
Soule spoke about his new series by saying “One of the things I want to explore is the fact that she wants to be exceptional at everything she does, but that’s not always possible. You can spread yourself too thin. One of the things I want to work hard to do in this new series is treat her as a real person.”
Editor Jeanine Schaeffer further described the lead hero as “a friend, a combatant, a confidant, and yet she’s still the hero of her own story.”
Jennifer Walter’s “day job” is an attorney dealing with super human cases, which Soule plans to explore. “For example, the Chameleon might come to her and want to sue someone for identity theft,” he suggested.”[It’s] sort of ridiculous, but you can say some interesting things in a story like that.”
But don’t expect simply courtroom drama! “She’s gotta punch stuff,” Soule commented. “It’s why she’s punching stuff that will make this series good.”
Schaeffer added that the series will have “real consequences not just for her but for all corners of the Marvel [universe].”
The new ‘She-Hulk’ series will launch in February of 2014.
