You may not have heard of it yet but ‘Extant’ has been circling the broadcast and cable networks looking for a place to call home. The show has recently been through a bidding war on who would get the rights to it and CBS was the final winner. Without a pilot, the show was so popular that the winning bid had to include a straight-to-series order of 13 episodes that will be airing next summer! Say what you will, but that speaks strongly for the script.

So what is ‘Extant’ you might ask? Well it’s a new science fiction/drama that is coming out from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and is written by rising star Mickey Fisher. The show has Greg Walker (executive producer of ‘Vegas’ and co-producer of ‘Smallville’) on board as the showrunner and Steven Spielberg (‘Falling Skies‘) will be executive producing.

While no official synopsis exists quite yet, we do know what the series is roughly about. The show revolves around a couple who have an android child who is extremely human. They also have another child on the way. This second child may or may not be an alien.

Wait, an alien?

Well the mother is a female astronaut who is returning from a year in space. It is hinted that her return is going to lead to events that will change the course of human history!

When making her pitch for ‘Extant’ to join their network, CBS executive Nina Tassler stated that they were successfully able to launch Stephen King’s ‘Under The Dome‘ (which is also produced by Amblin Entertainment) the same way:

“Extant is a very original concept with layers of humanity, mystery and surprise that reveal itself throughout the script. Our partnership with Amblin for ‘Under The Dome’ showed that viewers respond to high-quality event programming in the summer. We look forward to building on that with ‘Extant’ and offering CBS audiences another high-concept, unique event for summer television.

It is thought that the series could be paired up with the ‘Under the Dome’ which has been renewed for a second season to make Monday nights Steven Spielberg night since he’s an executive producer of both shows.

Details of ‘Extent’ are pretty light but with the names behind it and the quick straight to series order, the script has to be absolutely fantastic. With what little we know about the plot are you excited to see this one? Want to know more? We’ll be following the show as more details become available!
