Fans of Joss Whedon’s cult classic sci-fi/western series ‘Firefly’ have been teased with the possibility of an online game for years. But now, Fox Digital Entertainment and QMx Interactive Inc. have announced that they are seriously developing an officially licensed multi-user social online role-playing video game titled ‘Firefly Online’.
According to the press release on KeepFlying.com, FFO will allow players to step into the role of captain just like Mal Reynolds as they hire a crew and seek out jobs and adventures, while trading and competing against millions of players to survive the Verse. But no crew can function without a ship, so the player’s journey begins with customizing their own vessel.
Andy Gore, the CEO of QMXi and Quantum Mechanix Inc., which produces official collectibles and replicas for ‘Firefly’, had this to say about this long-awaited game:
“At QMx, we know firsthand how great and powerful a franchise ‘Firefly’ is and how mighty the Browncoats are. It has always been our mission to bring the Verse to life for our customers in every way possible. The idea of creating an interactive experience where fans can have their own Firefly adventures — well, that’s just too shiny for words.”
Along with the announcement came the first trailer for ‘Firefly Online’. You can check that out below:
This cross-platform game is initially set to debut on iOS and Android smartphones and tablets in the summer of 2014, but eventually it will expand to allow a player to play from anywhere. But if you’re too excited to wait a whole year for the game, you can head to the game’s official site to create an account to receive updates on the game until it’s debut.
