While much of what EA had to say at their E3 event came as no surprise to anyone, they still managed to surprise Star Wars fans with the announcement of a brand-new entry in the Star Wars Battlefront series.

The franchise hasn’t seen a new release since 2009 with the release of Star Wars Battlefront : Elite Squadron on the PlayStation Portable, and for the past few years many speculated as to whether or not the franchise was officially dead. Though the wait has been long, it was worth it to know that the new title is being developed by none other than DICE, the studio behind the critically-acclaimed Battlefield series.

Check out the short teaser trailer below.

Star Wars Battlefront is very similar to the Battlefield series, allowing players to jump into the role of a soldier in a never-ending galactic war. Teams fight to capture points across large maps, participating in battles on foot, in land vehicles, and now, it seems, aerial combat. The newest entry in the franchise has been built on the Frostbite 3 Engine, and will allow for large-scale online multiplayer combat.

Very little is known about the new project, but ScienceFiction, com will have more updates as soon as they come.
