With the opening of Paramount’s ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ behind us, we now have a chance to see how it actually did in theaters. While it took the spot of 2nd best Easter opening weekend ever at the box office, it only made $40.8 million domestically which was down 18% from the original film’s opening. While that might sound like bad news, the real numbers matter when you factor in the world wide opening which broke $120 million. The 3D that was added in (which caused the delay of the film’s release) really seemed to have paid off in the overseas market.

These numbers are roughly what the first film had done on it’s release. The difference here is that it pulled in the numbers on an Easter weekend and not the coveted Summer Blockbuster lot that the original had come out on.

What that means for the franchise is that ‘G.I. Joe 3’ is already in development. There are no details quite yet, but with the mostly positive reviews of the second film, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Jon M. Chu direct the third film with most of the cast reprising their roles.

What I’m wondering at this point is if we’re going to see more new characters introduced in the third film or if any from the first film will be returning? We had quite a few that were skipped over this time around and while there are always plenty of Joes to choose from, it’d be great to see some return, even if only as cameos. While I have no doubt from the rave reviews that we’ll see the return of Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson) as well as Storm Shadow (Byung-hun Lee), it’d be great to see at least one more Joe return from ‘Rise of the Cobra’.

Hopefully the next time around they shoot the film in 3D from the start so we don’t have a 6 month delay in production again. At the very least, fans of the films can rest easily knowing that a third movie is going to be coming out – and knowing is half the battle!
