Genre fans are very familiar with the writing team of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. After all, they’re 2/3 of the writing team that is driving Trekkies crazy trying to figure out what the plot details of ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ is! Thankfully, they are continuing with the genre as Universal has picked up one of their pitches for a new sci-fi motion picture.

The project is titled ‘Sagittarius A’ and the duo has obviously learned a thing or two from Abrams as there is not much more detail about the film besides the name and that it is sci-fi related. While Orci and Kurtzman pitched the idea to Universal, they are leaving the actual screenwriting for the film to Steven Karcynski, a relative unknown writer whose script for ‘The Umbra’ did land on the Black List for best unproduced scripts.

Considering Orci and Kurtman have worked with Damon Lindelof in the past, they may be following his lead in that the name of the project deals directly with plot. Much like Lindelof’s ‘Tomorrowland’, there really is something called Sagittarius A. Sagittarius A has been described by astronomers as a complex radio source located at the center of the Milky Way. Within Sagittarius A is Sagittarius A*which is believed to be the location of a supermassive black hole. From here, all sorts of sci-fi movie possibilities come to mind!

Will the film be a more metaphysical exercise? Will it deal with the idea of black holes and their role in time travel? Could the earth be in danger of being swallowed by a black hole located in Sagittarius A? Or (and this idea causes intense derision) will this be a mash up genre film like their ‘Cowboys and Aliens’ film?

Hopefully more information will come once Karcynski is finished scribing the screenplay.
