Usually, fans love to hear from those involved in comic book movies, especially when it’s an adaptation of a very popular title. Sometimes we’d get small glimpses, hints, and general teases of what our favorite heroes could be up to in their new medium, but other times, we’d just get tossed around by all the false reports. The biggest example of the latter is Mark Millar. For instance, he talked about things like ‘Kick-Ass 2’ and ‘Nemesis’ before anything was really set in stone. You can’t really blame the guy for getting excited, but when reporting on his “exclusive news”, one would have to take it with a grain of salt.
However, back in September, he took a job at Fox as their creative consultant for their Marvel properties and he’s bound by a contract to keep more tight-lipped than usual. Still, that doesn’t mean he can’t let a little bit out and he does exactly that with ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ in a recent interview with SFX while appearing at the Glasgow Film Festival.
According to the interview, Millar reveals that the Sentinels will play a huge part in the upcoming film directed by Bryan Singer. Though we were teased by a very brief appearance from the long-time X-Men foes in ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’, we haven’t actually had the opportunity to see them in all their glory on the big screen yet, but Millar says that that is about to change. Here’s what he said about the giant robotic mutant hunters:
“I don’t really want to give too much away but the Sentinels are a big feature of this story. They will be cool and this will deliver on all of the teasers. We’ve all been waiting for this ever since ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ showed us one of their heads. Now it is finally coming, and we only have to pay ten quid to see it in the cinema whereas they’re having to pay $100 million to deliver it. So I’m delighted [laughs].”
Fans of the series have been waiting to see Wolverine go at it with a Sentinel outside of the Danger Room via the Fastball Special for a long time and now we may get to finally see it in the sequel to ‘X-Men: First Class’.
The ‘Kick-Ass’ creator goes on to touch on the extensive cast of characters that appear in the film, but one in particular. Previously, we’ve learned that Singer has been adding many actors to reprise their roles from past X-Men films such as Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Anna Paquin, Shawn Ashmore, and Hugh Jackman. But one addition to the cast made fans perk up. Before she captivated audiences in ‘Juno’ or ‘Inception’, Ellen Page was in ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ as Kitty Pryde, who happens to have a rather large role in the original comic book version of ‘Days of Future Past’. In fact, it’s Shadowcat who does the time traveling in an attempt to stop the events that lead to the harsh dystopian future that her future self lives in. That’s how it plays out in the comics, but will it be different in Singer’s film? Here’s what Millar has to say about it:
“Ach, I can’t get into that [laughs]. As soon as I say something it will turn into a big internet story. Let me put it this way though: Kitty Pryde fans will not be disappointed.”
That doesn’t give us too much to work off of, but at least we know that she’ll be in the film. Hopefully it’s in a more expanded role than the one in Brett Ratner’s deplorable X-Men film since Page has blossomed into an A-list actress when she gets a chance to shine.
