Trekkies have another cause for celebration! Not only does 2013 bring in the New Year, it also brings in the much anticipated ‘Star Trek’ sequel, ‘Star Trek into Darkness’. Thanks to Empire, it also brings in additional information about the plot of this much awaited film.

The movie won’t be released for another 5 months and J.J. Abrams is still keeping much of the details secret. But according to Bleeding Cool, the new issue of Empire Magazine (which is on newsstands in the US now) contains a new plot description that brings a whole new light to Benedict Cumberbatch’s villain and the movie’s story.

Of course, this is the point where it’s necessary to insert the “SPOILERS AHEAD” warning, so unless you want to go into the film fresh, you just might want to jump to the next article.

This month’s Empire has some pretty cool covers featuring Cumberbatch as John Harrison and Chris Pine reprising his role as Captain James T. Kirk. The magazine article also includes some great new images from the movie, but it’s this tidbit that really catches the eye. It’s a portion of the piece describing the movie:

… with Earth under terrorist attack from Benedict Cumberbatch’s ex-Starfleet employee John Harrison, Kirk is this time forced into a rash decision that breaks a critical Starfleet command, puts his crew in danger & costs him his captain’s chair. Now out of uniform and dressed down in space civvies of black leather jackets and boots, our three heroes have separated from the Enterprise and headed off on a mission to try and rectify his mistake…

Ex-Starfleet employee? Kirk no longer a Captain? Spock, Uhura and Kirk off to rectify his  mistake? I don’t know about you, but that description really pumps up my excitement about the film! Add this to the new synopsis of the film Paramount released last month and the film really sounds epic – to the point where it doesn’t matter if Cumberbatch is really Khan or Gary Mitchell! Right?

And if you’re just as excited as I am, check out the images from the Empire article below.
