It’s not a huge secret that there are people out there who download things illegally. Sometimes you just can’t shell out $10 (or more in most cases) every time you want to see a movie, and with practically everything available on the internet these days, it’s hard to resist.

The folks at Torrent Freak (via Comic Book Movie) have complied a list of the most pirated films of 2012. As you could have probably guessed, two of the year’s biggest superhero movies, ‘The Avengers’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, are both on the list even after making billions at the box office worldwide. What is surprising, however, is that neither one holds the top spot on the list. Check out the full list below to see which movie was the most downloaded of 2012:

Yeah, that’s right. ‘Project X’, the found footage party movie from the producer of ‘The Hangover’ and ‘Old School’, was the most pirated film of 2012. That’s almost understandable since I didn’t know of too many people rushing out to see it. So, in a way, it’s good that Joss Whedon’s epic superhero team film and the final installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy didn’t take the top spot because that means people probably preferred seeing it in a theater.

It’s also interesting to note that some other of the year’s top films like ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’, ‘The Hunger Games’, ‘Looper’, and ‘Skyfall’ didn’t make it into the top ten.
