From the line-up of next year’s films, it looks like the newest trend for movie studios (besides remakes) is book adaptations. Besides the second installment of ‘The Hobbit’ being released, there is also ‘Beautiful Creatures,’ ‘The Host,’ and, of course, the second installment of ‘The Hunger Games.’ Among those is the highly anticipated adaption of Orson Scott Card’s ‘Ender’s Game’ and we have the first image from the movie here for you to see!
The image is a shot of Ender (Asa Butterfield) as he is standing in line with the other Launchies (a.k.a. new recruits) facing off with the daunting Colonel Graff (Harrison Ford) about whether or not e-mails to home are being blocked. The scene is said to occur early during his time in Battle School. Here’s a look:
Fans of the novel were a bit taken aback when during a visit to the set of ‘Ender’s Game,’ Scott stated that the movie will be different from his novel. Director Gavin Hood has spoken about one of the changes that he made (making the kids older than in the book) when he adapted the book for his movie:
“I discussed this at length with Orson. The decision was made very early on to compress the time period into about a year, so that we could have the same actor from beginning to end… We were trying to hit that sweet spot right around 12, which Asa fits in very nicely… When you sit down for two hours, you’re just beginning to bond with an actor, and then he changes and suddenly you’re bonding with someone who’s meant to be the same person, but you know he’s a different actor.”
Hood does, however, assure the same fans that the end of the movie will follow the novel’s own dark ending. “That ending — and the complex moral questions that it raises — is one of the reasons why I love the book,” he says. “I promise you that it is very much there.”
The film is not due to be in theaters for almost a year and there are high expectations. The book actually spawned a series so if the film does successfully at the theaters, it can very well be the beginning of a new franchise for Summit. Seeing that an image has already been released, hopefully that means a poster or teaser trailer will soon merge.
