If dwarves and hobbits are not your thing and you’d rather travel to the Final Frontier than Middle Earth, then you may want to reconsider as Paramount Studios has announced that they will be screening 9 minutes of ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ in 500 IMAX theaters before showings of ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.’

This marketing technique is nothing new as Warner Bros. did the same thing last year previewing 6 minutes of footage for ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ before the film ‘Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.’ What makes this special (besides the fact that it’s ‘Star Trek’) is that this will be the first film previewed in IMAX 3D so the footage should look spectacular.

So far the only thing fans have seen from director J.J. Abrams is 3 frames of film shown during Conan O’Brien’s show ‘Conan,’ so to see a gazillion more footage (okay, not gazillion but at 24 frames/sec  for 9 minutes it’s more like 12,960 times more frames to be exact!), it’s hard to contain the excitement!

Surprisingly no news has leaked as to what ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ will be about, but with the announcement that 9 minutes of footage will be shown, the anticipation has risen for this film. While it’s unknown what exactly will be seen on the screen, what is known is that Abrams has shot footage with IMAX cameras so it’s more than likely that this footage will be the ones used.

“Our longtime partners J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and the Bad Robot team have really hit it out of the park,” said Imax Filmed Entertainment president Greg Foster. “The footage is absolutely incredible. Their use of the IMAX Camera and canvas is sure to impress current and future Star Trek fans alike, and we’re thrilled to once again work with our friends at Paramount Pictures to offer this extended ‘first look’ at this highly anticipated summer blockbuster.”

Yes, this Thanksgiving there is lots to be thankful for!

So mark your calendars as the premiere of the 9 minutes of ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ will occur on December 14 at select theaters in IMAX 3D right before ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey!’

Directed by J.J. Abrams, ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ was written by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and brings the return of Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Karl Urban (Bones), Simon Pegg (Scotty), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Anton Yelchin (Chekov), John Cho (Sulu) and the addition of Benedict Cumberbatch, Noel Clarke and Nazneen Contractor. The film will be in theaters on May 17, 2013.
