Gareth Edwards made an impact in Hollywood with his 2010 film ‘Monsters’, and his career exploded from there once he became attached to the new incarnation of Godzilla for Legendary Pictures last year. At the same time, he started working on an untitled science fiction project with Timur Bekmambetov, the director of ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’ and ‘Wanted’, attached to produce. Now, thanks to an interview from Bleeding Cool, new details have emerged about this untitled project, which is now going by the name of ‘Forever’.
While sitting down with Bekmembetov, the filmmaker revealed that he’s ready to start working on ‘Wanted 2’ and ‘Forever’ now that things have wrapped on ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’. On ‘Forever’, he says:
“It’s happening. [Gareth Edwards] shot a test film, and we now have to wait until the script is in place. Gareth is meeting with the writer to polish the script. The writer is Dante Harper.”
Harper hasn’t had any work of his produced as of yet, but his adaptation of the novel ‘All You Need Is Kill’, which is in development at Warner Bros starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, is said to be pretty good, and ‘Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters’, which he scripted, is expected to be released early next year.
According to /Film, ‘Forever’ is being pitched as “a robot ‘Star Wars’ about a young human child (probably around 5 years old) and a robot who travel across the galaxy in search of mankind’s origin in a world void of humanity and filled with robots.” After reading that bit about “mankind’s origin”, I’m reminded of another sci-fi flick with a similar premise from a genre staple that was recently in theaters that also featured robots. Or androids. Whatever.
There’s no word which project, ‘Forever’ or the new Godzilla, Edwards will work on next, but it seems like both are on track to get made sooner or later.
